COVID-19 / Respiratory Pathogen Testing

Fast, accurate testing for COVID-19 and other respiratory viruses, so you get the right answers and the right care without delay.

When you wake up with a fever, cough, or sore throat, knowing exactly what you're dealing with changes everything. In our Los Angeles practice, we offer rapid and PCR testing for COVID-19 and other common respiratory pathogens, so you can move quickly toward the right treatment, including antiviral therapy when it's appropriate.

How Respiratory Pathogen Testing Works

Your visit begins with a brief review of your symptoms and exposures, which helps us decide which tests make the most sense for you. Most testing uses a gentle nasal swab; rapid antigen tests can return results in minutes, while PCR tests are sent to the lab for the highest accuracy.

Depending on your symptoms, we may test for COVID-19, influenza, RSV, or other respiratory viruses at the same time. If your symptoms point to a broader illness, we can pair testing with a focused exam or a comprehensive evaluation, and arrange a telehealth video consultation if you'd prefer to limit in-person contact.

How to Prepare for Your Test

Little preparation is needed. Try to avoid blowing your nose immediately before a nasal swab, and let us know about any recent medications, vaccines, or known exposures.

If you're feeling unwell, please call ahead so we can plan your visit safely and discuss whether an in-office test or a virtual visit with at-home testing is the better fit for you.

After Your Test: Results & Next Steps

Rapid results are reviewed with you during your visit, and PCR results are typically available within a day or two. We'll explain what your result means and outline a clear plan, whether that's rest and monitoring or starting antiviral treatment promptly.

If symptoms worsen or you have underlying conditions such as asthma or COPD, we'll monitor you closely and coordinate any specialist or hospital care including Cedars-Sinai if needed. For lingering or recurrent symptoms, we can also evaluate for an upper respiratory infection.

When Testing Is a Good Idea

  • You have new respiratory symptoms such as cough, fever, sore throat, or congestion.
  • You've had a known or suspected exposure to COVID-19 or another respiratory virus.
  • You need a confirmed result before travel, work, or visiting vulnerable family members.
  • You have a chronic lung or heart condition that raises your risk from respiratory infections.
  • Early diagnosis could make you eligible for time-sensitive antiviral treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

1What's the difference between rapid and PCR testing?
Rapid antigen tests give results in minutes and are great for quick answers when symptoms are present, while PCR tests are sent to the lab and offer the highest accuracy, especially early in an illness. We'll help you choose the right one, and sometimes both, based on your situation.
2Can you test for the flu and RSV too, not just COVID-19?
Yes. Many respiratory viruses share similar symptoms, so we can test for COVID-19, influenza, RSV, and other common pathogens, often from a single swab, to pinpoint exactly what's making you sick.
3How soon should I get tested after symptoms start?
Testing as soon as symptoms appear is ideal, since an early diagnosis can make you eligible for time-sensitive treatments like antiviral therapy. If you test very early and the result is negative but symptoms continue, we may recommend a repeat or PCR test.
4Do I need to come into the office to be tested?
Not always. Depending on your symptoms and risk, we can arrange in-office testing or pair a telehealth video consultation with at-home testing, so you can get answers while limiting exposure to others.
5What happens if my test is positive?
We'll review your result with you, explain what it means for you and your household, and create a clear plan, which may include rest, monitoring, or starting treatment promptly. If you have higher-risk conditions, we'll watch you closely and coordinate any further care including Cedars-Sinai when needed.
