Mammogram Referral & Coordination

Personalized breast cancer screening with effortless coordination, so early detection is one less thing to worry about.

A mammogram is a low-dose X-ray of the breast and the most effective screening tool we have for detecting breast cancer early, often before it can be felt. As part of your preventative medicine care in Los Angeles, Dr. Golian helps you understand your risk, orders the appropriate screening, and coordinates your imaging at Cedars-Sinai or another trusted imaging center — whichever you prefer — so nothing falls through the cracks.

How Mammogram Referral & Coordination Works

During your visit, we review your personal and family history, weigh any breast health concerns, and decide on the right screening interval for you. Dr. Golian then places the referral and coordinates with a trusted imaging center, so you arrive with your order already in place.

The mammogram itself takes only a few minutes: a technologist gently compresses each breast between two plates to capture clear images. If you have a finding or a higher-risk profile, we arrange additional views or follow-up imaging and loop in a specialist, including those affiliated with Cedars-Sinai, when appropriate.

How to Prepare for Your Mammogram

On the day of your appointment, skip deodorant, antiperspirant, lotion, and powder on your chest and underarms, as these can show up on the images and obscure results. Wear a two-piece outfit so you only need to undress from the waist up.

If you have prior mammograms from another facility, let us know so we can request those records for comparison. Mention any breast changes, new lumps, or symptoms beforehand so we can flag them for the radiologist as part of your comprehensive evaluation.

After Your Mammogram

A radiologist reviews your images and sends the report back to our practice, typically within a few days. Dr. Golian personally reviews your results with you, explains what they mean, and answers your questions, rather than leaving you to interpret a letter on your own.

Most results are normal and simply confirm your next routine screening date. If anything needs a closer look, we promptly arrange additional imaging, a biopsy, or a referral and stay involved through every step of your specialist coordination.

Why Coordinated Screening Matters

  • Early detection saves lives. Routine mammograms can find breast cancer years before symptoms appear, when treatment is most effective.
  • Personalized timing. Your screening schedule is tailored to your age, family history, and individual risk rather than a one-size-fits-all rule.
  • Seamless coordination. We place the referral, arrange the imaging, and chase down prior records so the process is effortless for you.
  • Results you understand. Dr. Golian reviews every report with you directly and explains the next step clearly.
  • Connected follow-up. Any abnormal finding is fast-tracked into the Cedars-Sinai network with continuous oversight from your physician.

Frequently Asked Questions

1How often should I get a mammogram?
Screening recommendations vary by age, family history, and personal risk, with many women beginning routine mammograms in their 40s. Dr. Golian will review your individual risk and recommend a schedule that's right for you.
2Does a mammogram hurt?
You'll feel firm pressure for a few seconds as each breast is compressed, which some women find briefly uncomfortable. Scheduling the week after your period, when breasts are less tender, can help.
3Will Dr. Golian perform the mammogram in the office?
No, the mammogram itself is done at a dedicated imaging center. Dr. Golian places the referral, coordinates the appointment at Cedars-Sinai or the imaging center you prefer, and reviews your results with you afterward.
4What happens if my mammogram shows something abnormal?
An abnormal result usually means more imaging is needed, not that you have cancer. Dr. Golian will promptly arrange additional views, an ultrasound, or a biopsy and coordinate any specialist care you may need.
5Do I still need a mammogram if I feel fine and have no symptoms?
Yes. Mammograms are designed to detect breast cancer before it causes any symptoms or can be felt, which is exactly why routine screening is so valuable.
