Pap Smear (ordered & coordinated)

Gentle cervical cancer screening with personal result review and coordinated follow-up, every step guided by your physician.

A Pap smear is a quick, routine screening that checks for early cell changes on the cervix long before they ever become a concern. At our Los Angeles Direct Primary Care practice, Dr. Golian orders and coordinates your cervical cancer screening, interprets your results with you, and personally manages any follow-up so nothing falls through the cracks. This is an essential part of your cervical health and broader preventative medicine plan.

What to Expect During Your Pap Smear

During the screening, a small sample of cells is gently collected from the surface of your cervix using a soft brush or spatula. The collection itself takes only a minute or two and is generally painless, though you may feel brief, mild pressure.

Depending on your age and history, your sample may also be tested for HPV, the virus most associated with cervical cell changes. The sample is sent to a certified lab, and Dr. Golian reviews the results with you directly, alongside the rest of your comprehensive physical examination when appropriate.

How to Prepare for Your Pap Smear

To help ensure an accurate result, it's best to schedule your Pap smear when you are not menstruating, ideally a few days after your period ends.

For 24 to 48 hours beforehand, avoid intercourse, vaginal douching, and using tampons, vaginal creams, or medications, as these can affect the cell sample. If you have questions about timing or any symptoms you've noticed, simply bring them up when you book and Dr. Golian will guide you.

After Your Pap Smear

Most results come back normal, and Dr. Golian will let you know when your next routine screening is due based on national guidelines and your individual history. You may notice very light spotting for a day, which is normal.

If your result is abnormal, there is rarely cause for alarm, most changes are minor and resolve on their own. Dr. Golian personally manages the next steps, which may include repeat testing, HPV co-testing, or a coordinated specialist referral for colposcopy, including seamless coordination including Cedars-Sinai when specialist care is needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

1How often do I need a Pap smear?
For most women, a Pap smear is recommended every three years from age 21, or every five years from age 30 when combined with HPV testing. Dr. Golian will personalize the interval based on your age, history, and prior results.
2Does a Pap smear hurt?
Most women feel only brief, mild pressure rather than pain. The cell collection takes just a minute or two, and letting Dr. Golian know if you feel anxious can help make the visit more comfortable.
3What does an abnormal Pap smear mean?
An abnormal result usually reflects minor cell changes, often related to HPV, rather than cancer. Many resolve on their own, and Dr. Golian will guide you through any needed repeat testing or follow-up.
4Can I get my Pap smear during my regular check-up?
Yes. Your Pap smear can be coordinated alongside your comprehensive physical and other preventive screenings, so your women's health care stays streamlined in one relationship.
5When will I get my results?
Lab results typically return within one to two weeks. Dr. Golian reviews them with you personally and explains exactly what they mean and what, if anything, comes next.
