Pre-Operative Risk Stratification Assessment

A thorough pre-surgical evaluation to understand your risk and prepare you for a safe, smooth procedure.

What to Expect During Your Pre-Operative Risk Assessment

Your visit begins with a focused history and a comprehensive physical examination, with particular attention to your heart, lungs, and any active medical conditions. Dr. Golian estimates your individual surgical risk using established clinical criteria and your personal health profile.

Based on your history, she may order a pre-op EKG or a pre-op laboratory panel to confirm your heart and metabolic health are optimized for anesthesia. A careful medication reconciliation ensures nothing in your current regimen creates avoidable risk.

How to Prepare for Your Assessment

Bring a complete list of your current medications and supplements, including doses, along with any records from prior surgeries or hospitalizations. If you have a known heart, lung, or bleeding condition, note it so Dr. Golian can plan accordingly.

Share the name and date of your planned procedure and your surgeon's contact information. This allows us to send your clearance and any recommendations directly to your surgical team and coordinate including Cedars-Sinai when your procedure is scheduled there.

After Your Assessment & Surgical Clearance

When your evaluation is complete, Dr. Golian provides a clear summary of your surgical risk and, when appropriate, a signed clearance for your surgeon and anesthesiologist. If a concern is identified, she may recommend optimizing a condition such as high blood pressure or diabetes before you proceed.

If further evaluation is needed, she arranges timely specialist referral and coordination. After surgery, she remains available for post-operative follow-up and recovery support to help you heal smoothly.

What This Assessment Helps With

  • Anesthesia safety. Confirms your heart and lungs are prepared to tolerate sedation and surgery.
  • Chronic condition optimization. Ensures issues like blood pressure, diabetes, or cholesterol are well controlled beforehand.
  • Medication planning. Identifies blood thinners or other medications that may need adjusting before your procedure.
  • Coordinated clearance. Delivers documentation directly to your surgeon and anesthesia team, including at Cedars-Sinai.
  • Fewer surprises. Reduces the chance of last-minute delays or cancellations on the day of surgery.

Frequently Asked Questions

1Why do I need a medical evaluation before surgery?
Surgeons and anesthesiologists need to know your full medical picture to keep you safe under anesthesia. A pre-operative assessment confirms your heart, lungs, and chronic conditions are stable and flags anything that should be addressed before your procedure.
2How long before my surgery should I schedule this?
Most patients are best seen about one to four weeks before surgery. That leaves time to complete any needed testing and to optimize a condition like blood pressure or diabetes without rushing close to your surgical date.
3Will I need an EKG or blood work?
It depends on your age, health history, and the type of surgery. Dr. Golian orders a pre-op EKG or laboratory panel only when it will meaningfully inform your surgical safety, rather than testing routinely.
4Do I need to stop my medications before surgery?
Some medications, especially blood thinners, may need to be paused or adjusted, while others should continue right up to surgery. Dr. Golian reviews each one with you and coordinates the plan with your surgical team.
5Can you send my clearance to my surgeon including Cedars-Sinai?
Yes. Dr. Golian sends your risk assessment and clearance directly to your surgeon and anesthesiologist, and coordinates including Cedars-Sinai Medical Center when your procedure is scheduled there.
